The Scream, by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, 1893. It is an expressionist work that uses wavy lines to depict a man walking in one direction along a bridge; two other people are walking together and fading away into the distance. The man in the center foreground has his hands clasped to his face in horror or disbelief or pure emotional overload; his mouth is an open circle of silent scream.
